Studio 15Z Is Nice & Has Backlit Keyboard, July 22, 2011 This review is from: Dell Studio 15Z 15.6-Inch Notebook PC Cappuccino (Personal Computers) This is a first generation I5 laptop, 4Gb of memory, 4-Watt SRS-enhanced 2.0 Integrated Stereo Speakers with discrete tweeters, 66 whr 9 cell battery, slot loading dvdr burner, a 500gb 7200 rpm disk drive, backlit keyboard, integrated webcam, integrated Bluetooth support, and is part of the Studio line of laptops. The Studio 15Z was designed as a Best Buy exclusive, but is now sold by others.
Dell discontinued the entire line of Studio laptops, in May. I suspect that Dell discontinued the Studio line because it was eating into profit margins of the XPS line of laptops. I purchased this computer mainly because of the backlit keyboard. I recently picked up this notebook new, for $489 from a major local retailer. Now with the Studio line discontinued, be prepared to spend $900+ to get a XPS laptop with a backlit keyboard!

Solidly built, sleek and esthetically yummy looking, no problems with performance, July 25, 2011 This review is from: Dell Studio 15Z 15.6-Inch Notebook PC Cappuccino (Personal Computers) The laptop is a pleasingly-looking machine with one of the nicest plastic finishes I've seen. It's on the heavy side despite being thin. The built quality is high - I just got rid (and a good riddance it was indeed) of my (second!) Toshiba L755-S5216 (newer Intel B940), and it felt literally disposable in comparison. The noise emanating from the Dell's fan, however, is rather loud and certainly much louder than of the said Toshiba. Performance is good, but I expected it to be just blazing with i5. No heavy, demanding stuff has been installed on it yet.
Only a week has passed since the purchase - barely enough time to set it up by first getting rid of endless amount of pre-loaded garbage and substituting it with proper software; I'll have further updates of this review once I've used the laptop more extensively. For now, the only conspicuous disappointment is the mere yet prominent 4.3 in Windows Performance Index for Aero. Come on, Dell, you can certainly do better... Read more

Dell studio 15z sold as new on line in description and on invoice, but came shipped in plain packaging, not manufacturer original packaging. and had figerprints on keyboard, no plastic wrap on screen or laptop as all new laptops do.
